Inside it are seedlings that may take years to reveal what they will become. Some will fail. Some will remain ordinary. Occasionally, one will become extraordinary, though it is often impossible to predict which one at the beginning.
What you are really buying is possibility.
I think academia once understood this instinctively.
Good research systems were not designed purely around immediate productivity or guaranteed outcomes. They made space for unfinished people, slow ideas, speculative thinking, and projects that needed time to mature before their value became visible.
Increasingly, modern systems struggle with this kind of uncertainty.
Everything must justify itself immediately:
grants
students
collaborations
projects
outputs
people
We optimise for predictability, measurable return, and visible productivity. But emergence rarely behaves this way.
The best honours student is not always the most polished one at the start.
The most meaningful collaboration may begin as a passing conversation.
The most important scientific observation may initially appear as noise.
Even in microbiome science, where we constantly speak about ecosystems and complexity, we often build institutions that tolerate very little uncertainty.
But growth has always involved uncertainty.
